Heavys: a true love letter to metalheads!

Having got a little excited about this piece, the Heavys are a pair of headphones that I look forward to having my hands on. As the company itself describes, the headphones are strictly intended for listening to Metal. The company’s goal is to turn “simple” listening into a more immersive experience, to make the emotions of the music we listen to even stronger. So let’s take a closer look at what makes this particular headset tick, and why it’s worth checking it out. Even before it hits the open market:

Heavys Back look

Why Metal?

Essentially, each piece of music has its own characteristics, and something that usually escapes the average listener is that each type of music has its own range and intensity. The average pop track, for example, is vastly different from the average metal track in this regard. So, metal-lovers can now get their hands on a better quality headset for their own kind of music. Which will bring into the foreground this metal flavoured sound that we metalheads love so much.

Furthermore, metal has its own dynamics and energy that must be part of the unique experience. If you compare live performances in each genre from how the tracks sound on the albums, much of the “essence” is obviously lost. For this reason, Heavys markets itself as being ‘lossless’, so you hear the most accurate representation of the audio that exists.

The basic technical characteristics

The four drivers that will be used by Heavys, touts double bass & extra tweeter driver system inspired by studio monitor technology. Heavys Shredtechâ„¢ supposedly protects the integrity of the unique and complex sounds of heavy metal music with low distortion. We will have more details about the sound spectrum specifics when they are released.

We expect them to have a specific patent regarding the volume. Virtually anyone can get a powerful headset to listen to loud music. This does not mean, however, that it will sound right or proper. Even worse, this can damage the drum in the long run and usually does not have the desired results. Louder is not better, you just think it is. For this reason, Heavys choses to increase perceived loudness without hearing loss through tuning technology. How well it works will have to be seen, of course.

Heavys intend to achieve significant noise cancellation. There will be memory foam in the ear cups and it will provide possibilities for wired and wireless use. As mentioned, it will also have a built-in microphone for gamers. There is nothing better than being on call listening to music and obviously all your friends get to listen to you screaming out the lyrics. Let’s say Iron Maiden is playing in the playlist, it would be a shame to listen to it just in your head. Everybody should get to enjoy it along with you!

Heavys Top Look

Axel Grell, the mastermind behind Heavys

All of this is designed by Axel Grell. He obviously has staff around him, but it is important to have a great professional in such projects. Certainly most of our readers will not know him, but it is important to note that we are talking here about a sound veteran.

Axel has worked for years with Sennheiser, one of the largest audio companies in the world. He has created the HD Series, something that those who have been looking for headsets, have definitely heard of. His goal was to create a product that would emphasize all the little details and nuances of music.

Detail is the key

In metal, detail is crucial. There is a distinct probability that compression will deform the sound, or cause unsalvageable loss in the frequency spectrum. This in turn causes a drop in music quality, and consequently, a different result from the artist’s vision. Heavys recognises this, and hopes to provide the answer to these problems.

Another goal of Heavys, is to offer flat sound. For those who do not know what this means, is that the device does not colour the sound with its own characteristics. There are headsets that emphasize the low frequencies, or the high ones, something that usually drowns the medium ones. With the technology they apply, they aim to make everything sound as clear as possible. As if your favourite artist is playing next to you.

Heavys explanation

A few final words until the release …

The reason I’m excited about testing the Heavys is that it is all made to respect the artist, the sound engineer and the listener. The flat sound is something that many can see and think: “Yes but I want the bass to be extra heavy”.

In this, it is worth mentioning that the entire music production prepares a time-consuming piece so that it can be heard properly by anyone, by the professionals who make up the entire production line. From the simplest sound recording to mastering and then playback. This is how the work of the production will look like, but the listener will have the opportunity to listen to the music he has been listening to for years, just even better.

Heavys will not be cheap, we already know that. On the other hand, I do not think it should be. As we see on the page you can pre-order a model at 153 euros. For such quality, it is an investment, and I can definitely say that their construction seems to be durable and worth it for long-term use.

As their official page shows, we will see them arrive somewhere around November 2022. It is worth taking a peek and seeing even more details about this particular headset if you are a metalhead.

Support them on Kickstarter or simply follow them on Instagram and Facebook to be informed by them about the next stages of their vision. Or, if you are looking for a good XBOX-focused headset, check out our Arctis 9X review.
