The new Resident Evil movie takes the John Carpenter approach

Director Johannes Roberts reveals his inspiration for the upcoming film Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City.

Recently, director Johannes Roberts stated that John Carpenter is his main inspiration for the upcoming Reboot of Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City. The name of the movie was announced a few days ago, revealing a total reboot, which will take viewers all the way back to the unforgettable Racoon City.

Although previous Resident Evil movies became box office hits, franchise fans were not satisfied. According to claims, the films did not follow the games’ storylines at all. The new film will focus on the creation of the Resident Evil universe, and its events will take place in Raccoon City during 1998. At the same time, the creators’ goal is to satisfy the fans, remaining closer to the source material and adapting it to the two original Resident Evil video games, released in the 90’s.

In addition, according to Roberts’ interview with IGN, the reboot will focus more on the horror aspects that appeared in the original video games. Therefore, we can expect a survival-horror dimension rather than the action-horror one of previous films.

When asked about the film’s aesthetics, Roberts referred to horror film legend, John Carpenter:

“I’m a huge John Carpenter fan and I really took to that. The way he tells these claustrophobic siege movies and I took movies like Assault on Precinct 13 and The Fog and these disparate group of characters coming together under siege, and I took that as my filmic inspiration”.

Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City is to be released on September 3rd, 2021 by Sony Screen Gems. The film might manage to get positive reactions from the fans of the original games. Whatever the case may be, the film is a big step that could breathe new life into the franchise.
